Good and Bad Things About World of Tanks

World of Tanks - Good & Bad headlogo - EN

World of Tanks is a free to play armored warfare based shooter from Wargaming, the first of the series of “World of..” games players get to choose from a variety of WW2 nations and pilot their own vehicles in team based battles. The game has a wealth of features and has accrued a fan base that are also some of the biggest critics, so now we take a look at the game to weigh up the good from the bad.

The Good

  • Lots of Vehicle Variety - Players can choose from over 400 tanks, from some of the most prominent nations that fought in WW2; each with their own stats, pros and cons that suit a variety of playstyles

  • Great Graphics - The graphics and detail on vehicles are still very impressive for an older game, combined with the overall map design and environment textures and particle effects it makes a very immersive gaming experience

  • Modable - The community can, and do, create a wealth of mods for the game that players can install, these range from improving assets, adding voice packs, changing UI and generally tweaking things the devs haven't gotten round to

  • Fast Arcade Action - The game is easy to jump into and just start playing and has perfectly captured the fast and furious Arcade gameplay

  • Steep Learning Curve - Whilst not a pro in everyone's eyes, where there is a steep learning curve it means that the game requires an element of player skill, which we're all for!

  • Clan Wars - Global military campaigns where players can fight against each other in their Clans to try and earn influence and be rewarded with gold; fight on different Tier based fronts and capture different regions to dominate the world

The Bad

  • Forced Tank Purchases - To climb up the tech tree you need to buy and upgrade the previous vehicle in that tree, meaning players are forced to spend currency on tanks and modules that they may not even ever plan on using...

  • Too Few Maps - The game lacks maps, and new maps are added at an extremely slow pace; playing the same maps over and over gets extremely boring

  • Tier Imbalance - Players in low tier tanks are frequently matched up against players in high tier tanks, giving them very little chance of being able to do anything against them

  • Limited Game Modes - There are only three game modes, which are restricted to certain maps and always consist of base capture (both teams have a base and you must capture the enemies', 1 team has a base, or both teams try to capture a neutral base)

  • Gold Ammo - Players can buy premium (i.e. with real cash) "Gold Ammo" that has a penetration value so that players can bypass armor to get kills easier. It's kinda pay to win (as there's no limitation) and makes tanks that rely on high Armor to survive relatively worthless

  • Spotting - In general players can use terrain to hide their tanks, when they have been Spotted they will appear to other players; however there are certain modules and skills that allow you to "camouflage" so that you can't be seen and so tanks literally turn invisible, which is a little on the unrealistic side...
