How Free-to-Play Is Vindictus?

Vindictus - F2PMeter headlogo - EN

For this round on our F2Pmeter we're looking at Nexon's Vindictus, a free to play fantasy-based MMORPG where players can customize their own character, choosing from a list of ore-generated characters each with their own class as they travel the world seeking out adventure and bad guys!

As ever all our games start out at 100% free to play, then they'll lose points (or keep them) as we progress through our list of questions, then at the end we'll know just how F2P a game really is. So let's begin!

EN - Question 1

No. The game is completely free to download for Windows.

EN - Question 2

No. There are currently no subscription offers for the game, but instead a focus on purchasing premium currency.

EN - Question 3

No. There are currently no purchasable expansions or DLCs.

EN - Question 4

Yes ― -5%. The game focuses on players purchasing Nexon Cash (NX) which can be spent in game to purchase a wide variety of things, everything from avatar customization to buffs, heal potions and other items from the "Supply Depot". NX is a cross-game premium currency available to spend in all Nexon's titles and not specifically for Vindictus.

The lowest amount of NX a user can purchase is 4,500 NX for $5, there is no reduction in price/saving for buying more cash (45,000NX costs $50).

EN - Question 5

No (but...) ―5%. In comparison to normal players, those who purchase some of the Supply Depot items get a minor advantage as they get access to some gear more quickly than they might in game, but the majority of the items available can be acquired through playing.

EN - Question 6

No. There are no UI restrictions.

EN - Question 7

Yes. All characters/classes are accessible in the game and players have 6 character slots to try out different characters, with more character slots purchasable with NX.

EN - Question 8

No. Players are able to access the Auction House free of charge to sell items to other players.

EN - Question 9

Yes ― -10%. Players lack basic inventory required to store more than a handful of items, making crafting very difficult with nowhere to store materials. Storage Chest Expansion Tickets can be purchased for 30 days (3900NX) and 90 days (7900NX) or as a Permanent feature (10,900NX, which is around $12).

EN - Question 10

No (but...) ― -5%. There are limitations as to how many times you can access certain areas, such as raids, but you can pay to refresh them.

EN - Question 11

Yes ― -15%. In a manner of speaking, as with the issue above. Accessing dungeons and raids costs Tokens, players get an allotment every few days that they spend to enter these places, once they have been spent up (which usually takes a couple of hours) they can't enter dungeons unless they spend NX to buy more tokens.

EN - Question 12

Yes (kind of) ― +10%. However, being competitive or playing the game more than casually players do hit quite a few roadblocks. Customization for F2P players is extremely limited, and inventory space is minimal, whilst the items that can be purchased are mostly for convenience, the game is geared to be extremely inconvenient if you don't pay anything. If you're happy with playing casually and don't care about spending a fortune on avatar skins and dyes, then you can play the game for free without much of a problem.

Vindictus gets a 70% in our test.
