Things You Would Change About SMITE

SMITE - op-ed headlogo - EN

We’re looking at the first popularised third person MOBA from Hi-Rez studios where players take on the role of various Gods across numerous ancient multi-polytheistic pantheons and do battle against each other in 5 v 5 bouts of pushing minions up lanes and destroying bosses. There are a lot of things that we do love about the game, but it isn’t without its shortfalls.

A More Dangerous Jungle
Clearing a camp is too easy. A part of the game we’re really not happy with is how quickly/easily laners are able to clear out certain camps to get their buffs and still have enough time to get back in lane for XP. We feel like, individual laner character design aside, the jungle just isn’t dangerous enough and could do with some minor (and some major) tweaks to make this style of play a little harder and combat in general more fun. Firstly the positioning of the camps we’d like to make a little more dangerous and closer to the middle of the map, making them more easily contestable by the enemy team and suddenly ducking out of lane leading to XP loss and the chance of getting jumped when you’re getting to the end of the camp. Secondly we’d love to see Fog of War put back into the jungle, which was removed due to graphical exploits where lowering your settings removed it (therefore kind of forcing players to lower their own settings to combat other players doing it for advantage). If Hi-Rez could sort out the technical issues we’d love to see the return of FoW and a way to make jungling more challenging.

Single Map Conquest Mode
We want more maps. Ever since Heroes of the Storm came out with their near a dozen primary maps we’ve really found other MOBA quite difficult to play when the primary game mode (in Smites case Conquest mode) being on the same map over and over. Whilst learning every nuance of a map can be fun, it creates a fairly familiar and repetitive experience after a while that we’re just not happy with; whilst we’re not saying the main function of the mode should change, having some new maps for Conquest would be a breath of fresh air as the maps for other modes are a little too niche for us to play regularly.

We Should Be Able to Play Abrahamic Characters
The Christian, Islamic and Judaic religions/God aren’t playable. Now we’re well aware that modern day faith can be problematic, we’re aware of how many people this would enrage to see Yahweh represented in the game and we all know what happens if you even try to depict Mohammed; it’s a sensitive matter and one we can understand that the developers chose to avoid. However, they then decided it’s fine to put in Hindu gods and goddesses, Hinduism worshipped by over 900 million followers across the world. The fact that the religion isn’t monotheistic (only one God) and many Gods are variations/forms of other Gods in the same pantheon (particularly Vishnu who is one of the most significant deities in Hinduism) does offer a wealth of Gods to choose from, but we’re not sure why making Rama a God in the game (one of the forms of Vishnu) is any more or less appropriate than putting in Jesus. The developers have stated they feel the Abrahamic gods are “all peaceful”, “never fought each other” and aren’t “interesting in character design”. We think that Old Testament God (Christian/Judaic) bringing down the 10 plagues on Egypt to destroy the “Egyptian Gods” would be some pretty awesome AOE abilities! Honestly it just feels like it’s not as important to upset those that worship Hinduism than it is those that worship Islam, Judaism or Christianity; either add patrons of other religions or remove the Hindu deities we say.

Imbalance in Joust Mode
Joust 1v1 is imbalanced and pretty pointless. Joust is the one versus one game mode in SMITE, which whilst fun in its own way is a complete imbalanced mess; it was added into the game without much thought other than “one lane with 1 tower each will be fun”. The game was designed as a team game, specifically 5 v 5 for the main mode, there are certain Gods that can’t survive on their own and need a team, and others excel at single hero damage but have failings elsewhere when fighting in a team. So when the 1 v 1 mode was implemented it pretty much meant that some Gods became the usual instant picks and others just aren’t even worth considering; there’s a huge Tier skew for the game mode between overpowered and completely worthless that you don’t see in the other modes. What we would really like to see implemented was a buff/debuff system on Joust where the OP heroes are tweaked down for that game mode, and the underpowered ones made more viable.

So that’s what we’d change with Smite, but more importantly what do you believe should be changed? What do you think could/should be added to improve the game? What would you add to your own personal wish list? Let us know what you think in the comments below!
