Things We Love About Swordsman

Things We Love About… Swordsman Online is our next article. This game is a fast action MMORPG from Perfect World set in a Wuxia-based ancient China as seen in the popular novels by author Jin Yong/Louis Cha The Smiling, Proud Wanderer. The game focused on quest based story driven content with high levels of PVP as players can join a variety of martial arts schools to create their own unique wandering hero.

We’ve checked out the game and here’s the things that we think makes Swordsman Online stand out the most:

  • A Variety of Schools - Players can choose from numerous martial arts schools. Although there is some debate to be had that the Schools (which act like Classes) aren’t always that dissimilar from one another, we personally think the subtle touches and slight differences make all the difference and warrant being there. As well as having a variety of different skills, based around different types of combat (offensive, defensive, support) and able to control different elements; one of the most interesting aspects of the game is the subtle restrictions such as only male characters being able to join the Shaolin school.

  • PVP and Combat - Fast, fun and competitive combat. With the numerous available schools opening up a variety of classes, each being customizable to different styles of play, these differences particularly shine in combat, especially PVP. The PVP element of the game is way up there in terms of priority, a lot of the gameplay features revolving around it with numerous battlegrounds and arenas that players can experience with a “normalizing” mechanic to balance player stats and make battle more about skill than level. However, from level thirty players lose their PVP shield and are then susceptible to the challenges that come with open world PVP where players are freely attackable in most areas of the world. Putting such a focus on PVP in many ways separates Swordsman Online from other MMORPGs, it is a game that ultimately says “PVP is important, accept it or don’t play”, which given that combat is so predominant we say bravo.

  • Guilds - Guilds give more options to players. There are two types of guilds that players can join, or can create themselves providing they complete a higher level quest; Mercenary Bands and Bandit Camps. Mercenary Bands focus on fighting criminals, escorting, and generally doing good, in comparison the Bandit Camps focus on gaining wealth through criminal means, holding up caravans, kidnapping and rescuing fellow criminals before they are executed. The extra objective focused features also tie in with the Turf War element where guilds can battle for land, either through fights or completing quests.

  • Immersive Gameplay - The world of Swordsman Online is captivating and immersive. There are many things that go into the game that have made it a truly immersive experience; the world and environment design itself makes walking around the various regions a site to behold, with good quality graphics that still hold their own, an in depth story-arc based on Louis Cha’s novel and emphasized with epic cinematic cut scenes (spoken Manadarin with subtitles) really create that movie quality experience.

  • Wuxia - We love Wuxia. Ever since we first watched Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon we’ve loved the idea of being able to live and breathe in a world where wuxia was the primary theme, way before the spate of MMORPGs came along. Swordsman Online combines the wonderful environments to explore, story driven adventure, and explosive combat across rooftops and dashing through the air, all of which are key to a successful Wuxia. The key ingredients are included in the game and each of its own accord is done extremely well and is extremely strong.

So that’s what we love with Swordsman Online, but more importantly what are some of your favourite things? What do you think could/should be added to our list that makes the game great? Let us know what you think in the comments below!
