Players Speak about Marvel Heroes 2015

Marvel Heroes 2015 - F2Peer Review headlogo - EN MMOR

We offer up Marvel Heroes 2015 to the Players Speak guys and gals to give us their take on this Marvel inspired free to play action RPG set in the Marvel Universe and created by Blizzard North co-founder and creator of Diablo David Brevik. With a huge cast of heroes (and a handful of classic villains) to choose from players can group up, gear up and clean up the streets in a combat intensive PVE focused MMO. So let’s see what they had to say:

  • JimSlam: Overall it isn’t a bad game, the combat is definitely fun and lives up to its “action” title and I particularly enjoyed my time with Deadpool and Cyclops, however the game really lacks either a decent/more active PVP community or improved PVP feature. Queueing takes a long time and we only managed to try our hand at it a couple of times, looking into it on the forums it seems like players actually organize PVP schedules to make sure enough players are online to play a few games (that’s a pretty sad thing). I can see why, my first impressions of PVP weren’t amazing and being a PVE focused game probably means it’s a game I wouldn’t spend too much time on; maybe if they turned the PVP into a more Infinite Crisis style MOBA people would be more interested, right now it feels like PVP is a feature they tacked on but don’t give much love to.

  • IAMJohn: For those like me who grab a bit of time to play whenever they can the game seems ideal, straight away you’re thrown into your own adventure like from the comics and movies and, as Captain America (one of my all-time favourite heroes) I couldn’t have been happier. Following the solo single player quest content was pretty easy, but some of the areas definitely require groups, thankfully getting into pickup groups is pretty simple and as often as not found myself playing for a few hours with the same people. Definitely good fun and whilst I think it would be hard/time consuming to get a full roster of heroes, there’s plenty of free ones to choose from if you don’t want to pay any cash.

  • Kittypride: I love Marvel. I love Marvel Heroes 2015. I love that I got to play as Loki (Tom Hiddleston…. Oh my), but with so many heroes with so many different abilities I do feel slightly overwhelmed and spoiled for choice on who I want to focus on. I love the levels of gear customization and the hero costumes are a really nice touch, letting you dress as heroes from their various comic, cartoon and movie iterations. The biggest problem I had with the game is that as I am a pack rat at heart and never like throwing items away in case they are useful at a later date, I VERY quickly found my inventory and Stash getting full; I can’t imagine how bad that would get with multiple heroes sharing the same Stash and playing for any length of time. I love the Achievement system and already started racking them up, particularly I’m interested in the Top Secret achievement where you have to unlock ten secret achievements to get the badge; very mysterious!

  • Ballgon: Wasn’t a big fan of Diablo 4: Heroes Assemble, oh wait, sorry, I mean Marvel Heroes 2015. It’s fair enough that David Brevik was instrumental in creating the Diablo series, but making a Diablo clone and reskinning it (and not even making a superior product) really seems like the guy only has one string to his bow. The storyline was pretty boring, predictable and filled with every trope you could conceive; definitely didn’t live up to some of the comicbook storylines. This game is alive for two reasons: firstly that is has “Marvel” splashed on it and is capitalizing on the popularity of the franchise, and that David Brevik is still riding on the back of Diablo’s success. It is an integrity lacking cash cow whose full on in your face shop (it literally has a keybind to open the shop in game…) just smells of corporate greed.

  • Tenebrae: I am a big time roleplayer, but any time I see the “RPG” suffix attached to a game I cringe, games have developed far beyond the original use of the RPG term, where complete immersion into your character such as in MMORPGs and creating your life, or detailed mechanics allowing you to define your path in a choose your own adventure style game (Baldur’s Gate, Mass Effect, Dragon Age: Origins). Marvel Heroes is none of those, it’s a fair generic, though well put together game, but it doesn’t really deserve the RPG title in my opinion. It would be one thing if I could really immerse myself in my chose hero, if I could be made to feel like I was them and I had more choices on the path they would take and influence the story line, but the illusion is quickly shattered where you have a dozen of the exact same superhero running around you doing exactly the same quest.

  • Elijah: I’ve played Marvel Heroes 2015 quite a bit, unlocking the majority of the Heroes it’s definitely a fun game and has so much customization to it and options; the only issue is that to get the most out of those options you do kind of have to go a little hardcore. The cash shop isn’t that expensive, not when compared to other games, and once you get a bit of momentum then you can pull in enough Eternity Splinters to unlock the other heroes for free. The game does suffer from grind every so often, particularly once you’ve run a few characters to max level, there’s only so many times you want to go through the same areas, but with a break here and there the action combat is still as exciting as when I first started playing. The game suffers in a few areas and is far from short on problems, but for the most part it’s pretty fun and well put together.

  • Your_Nemesis: As an old school gamer I was heavily into Diablo and Diablo 2 (almost twenty years ago…) so it was pretty clear where David Brevik’s influence had come into play when designing and developing MH2015 (a little TOO influenced at times perhaps). It is definitely a fun game and captures the same mechanics and action of Diablo, presuming that’s what the developers were going for as from reading up on the game there’s rarely an article or interview with David Brevik where either he or they bring up Diablo. However, whether it’s rose tinted glasses and nostalgia, or just having more experience with games and expecting more these days, I didn’t feel MH2015 captures the same spirit that the Diablo titles did, the setting and medieval fantasy horror aspect for me is much more compelling and the characters create a much more interesting story than those of the Marvel comic books.
