New Info on The Division

The Division - Article - EN

During this year's Gamescom, a Q&A with the developers of The Division provided us with new information on this breath-taking open-world RPG coming in 2015. We've also got some new screenshots and artworks for you.

First thing first. The game is set in a post-apocalyptic open world in which a virus has almost destroyed everything. Players are agents of The Division and have to bring New York back from chaos and find out the truth behind the pandemic. The virus permeates the whole city and agents will be forced to deal with different levels of contamination.

The game is an RPG at its core, which means that players will need to acquire new abilities and gear. It's an open-world, so it's possible for players to choose where to go and what areas they want to secure; however, in order to move into certain zones, proper gear will be needed. Specific equipment, such as a gas mask, will be very important to survive.

And that's not all. As if a deadly virus were not enough, in The Division's version of New York there are many factions players will have to face. There is a group called 'The Cleaners', a hostile faction that roams throughout the city wearing hazmat suits and wielding flamethrowers, burning everything to cleanse contaminated areas.

One of the objetives in the game is to take control of different locations in the city, bases of operations that players have to reclaim to increase the security level of the districts, creating a safe haven for the civilians as well as a strategic point.

Talking about skills, developers told us that players are not locked into a class choice. They have the power to pick the skills and tolls that best fit with their play-style. However, there are skill categories that follow the RPG system and offer different choices. For example, players could pick a crowd-control skill called Strobe that blinds enemies and exposes them from cover; the Pulse skill, which will highlight obstructed enemies and provide additional combat information; more direct skills, such as Sentry, which gives additional firepower; or even defensive skills to heal team-mates.

The Division has been developed with co-op and multiplayer gameplay in mind. Collaboration between players is crucial. Skills have been designed with this idea, so aggressive play-styles synergize really well with defensive ones. Nevertheless, players will be able to switch skills on the fly, so it's easy for the group to adapt their approach.

Something that really caught our attention is the day-night cycle. The Division's world is dynamic, so day-night cycle and the weather system are meaningful and immersive. These features therefore impact both gameplay and the player's experience. The city becomes more dangerous at night and enemies will behave differently.

The world is really realistic, the Snowdrop engine is able to produce highly realistic lighting with volumetric fog as well as new types of lights for the indoor areas. We are really eager to play The Division.
