A couple of years ago, one of the most played free online FPS games was probably Combat Arms. Even now, with some years under its belt (the game was released in 2008) the game is still quite popular due to its system of clans, its great selection of weapons, their fast paced games and great accessibility. The game did not offer too many novelties in terms of game modes, theme, or innovation, but the whole package was well wrapped and the game has been constantly updated with new features following the trend of the time

In the case of the recently launched S.K.I.L.L. Special Force 2, the game offers a very competitive gameplay experience that mixes the arcade style of Combat Arms and a much more Hardcore approach; in SKILL 2 or 3 shots are enough to kill you, and in the hardcore mode one shot is enough to bring you down. Only with this detail you can see how the game is more oriented towards hardcore and competitive gamers. SKILL has a huge selection of game modes that will satisfy even to the most demanding player; the game doesn't try to offer anything revolutionary, but at the same time is a perfect example of a complete and classic online FPS game.

On the other hand, MechWarrior Online and Hawken have decided to offer something special and unique by bringing the mech theme in the FPS world and they did it by following two different approaches; which allows them to co-exist with other FPS on the market without having to compete for players. MechWarrior Online brought the fight between giant mechanical beasts on a more tactical and strategic dimension, requiring perfect teamwork and a well-planned strategy. In MechWarrior Online the mechs feel much heavier and "realistic” and you can feel their weight at each step. Hawken focused on more fast paced action-packed gameplay, where lightning reflexes, sudden thruster jumps and last second dodges are the main courses and the only things that prevents you from becoming a smoking wreck. In both games you can customize your mech in order to make your unique war machine.

Another game which tries to innovate the genre with its unique features is Ghost Recon Online, from Ubisoft. With a Third Person view (so it is not technically an FPS) the developers have added an interesting cover system, with which players can take cover and hide behind any corner, barrier or rubble, which actually adds a whole new tactical level to the game, completely changing the usual approach to the shooter genre. Ghost Recon Online is very focused on the coordination of the teams, and creates an awesome experience if you play in a tactical way with your team.

Planetside 2 on the other hand distances itself from the small arena matches offered by the majority of online FPS games and put the emphasis on the Massive in MMOFPS by offering you a HUGE endless war fought through three continents by tree different factions. No game modes or matchmaking, just a persistent open world war. To travel around the continent and have fun killing people you will have at your disposal different types of vehicles such as quad bike, tanks, air carriers, fighters and more, and several classes to choose from. Planetside 2 is a truly unique experience in this genre, and even if the game can't give you the quick game session that you need when you have a short break and you just want to shoot here and there without thinking too much, we think that more new MMOFPS should try to follow this interesting approach.

The last game that we want to talk about is Warface; launched a month ago Warface’s main feature is that you can play it directly from your browser, through Gface, Crytek's new web-based gaming platform. It’s a browser game that offers amazing graphics that we've only seen in few client games before. This game has demonstrated the potential of the browser games, which allows you to enjoy a huge quality MMOFPS without having to download anything. We hope to see more and more experiments like this, which bring us to question a lot of dogmas such as client games = high quality, browser games = poor quality.
