Lord of Ultima is available now for free

Phenomic, an Electronic Arts Inc. studio, announced today Lord of Ultima, a new browser-based online strategy game is available worldwide for free starting today. Lord of Ultima immerses players in a brand-new, deeply-rich strategy game set within the Ultima universe. The game introduces innovative social features, such as advanced trading, alliance creation, online chat and community forums, which make for an endlessly entertaining experience. Lord of Ultima is a free-to-play MTX browser-based game. No download or installation is needed and players do not need to register to play.

β€œLord of Ultima was designed to ensure that everyone, from strategy newcomers to diehard fans, can make it to the top of the leader board,” said Volker Wertich, Creative Director at Phenomic. "Phenomic is committed to building dynamic communities that delight players as they interact with the game, each other and the legendary world of Ultima.”

To become the Lord of Ultima, players will master the arts of diplomacy and trade, as well as the military activities of spying, plundering, and the takeover of enemy cities. Set in the new world of Caledonia, players start the game as eager conquerors in the early stages of raising an empire, and then move from developing a humble village and evolving it into a prosperous, highly customized capital. Players can flourish as peaceful merchants by trading resources over land or sea and using diplomacy. They can also become feared conquerors, by creating mighty armies of knights and mages to crush enemies.

[Disclaimer: I’ve only played for a couple of days, but this is what I’ve noticed so far..]

    Much like Evony, except:

    – Very few meaningful references to Ultima; Trinsic Shrines and Moonglow Towers just generate paladins and mages
    – Fewer servers, which seem to be slower/less dependable
    – Non-scaling interface; difficult to play on small screen; entire city view doesn’t fit on one screen
    – Fewer building graphics; level indicated by superimposed numeral
    – More complex building placement rules; resources are found inside city, rather than in the immediate countryside
    – No heroes; instead of gaining bonuses by assigning a hero to be mayor, specific ministers of war, defense, and building must be hired
    – Map is broken up into continents, necessitating sea travel, shipyards, and ports; maps have nothing to do with the original Ultima maps
    – Raidable dungeons scattered around the map guarded by various monsters; some monsters (larger ones like dragons and hydra), are free-ranging
    – Fewer misspellings πŸ™‚ but still some (“deposites”, etc.)

The game is a waste of time. It is full of multi accounts and cheaters. They use 3rd party programs and scripts to run multiple accounts. If they cleaned that up and maybe made the game a little faster it might be decent at best. There are many other options out there besides this game…

    LOU is a rip off

There is NO SUPPORT, and if you spend any money, you will be ripped off. It’s a waste off time also. The site is buggy and full of errors! The support desk completely ignores you, but they are happy to take your money. Do NOT play Lord Of Ultima unless you like being ripped off. There is an honest review.

I have played both Evony and Lord of Ultima, LOU is a more enjoyable, strategy intensive long term game hands down. I have not had the same issues that some of the other posters refer to, maybe that was in earlier versions of the game.

May not be a true “Ultima” game from the past if that is what you are looking for, but if you are looking for a long term, strategy based world domination game with ongoing action this one will hold your interest for sure.
