Good and Bad Things about SWTOR

Star Wars The Old Republic - news

Star Wars: The Old Republic is EA/BioWare’s free to play MMORPG set in Lucas/Disney’s Star Wars franchise, a game filled with features including PVP, PVE, Questing, Exploration, Crafting and the in depth story content provided by BioWare. Players will be transported back to a time long before the films in an era where Jedi and Sith dominated the galaxy. The game itself struggled at release, but has repaired the damage and more since then, however it still has its faults and so we shall check out the best and worst of SWTOR.

The Good

Light/Dark Side Decisions – Throughout the game players will face a number of decisions that can be light side or dark side, giving a different result to the story, but also increasing their light side and dark side score, so players can be more light side focused Sith or a darker, meaner Jedi

Class Based Story-Arcs – Every class has their own unique quest chain that lasts the full level range from 0 to 60, taking players on an exciting storyline that revolves around exploring their character and makes them the stories’ lead role

Exploration Based Content – Players can explore the world looking for unique locations and creatures to add to their codex entries, or seeking out datacrons to give them boosts, with some content being in hard to find or hard to reach locations

Phenomenal Cinematics – Created by Blur Studios (the guys that also created The Elder Scrolls Online cinematics, Tom Clancy’s: The Division, Assassin’s Creed Unity and more) the cinematics for the game are top notch and really build up the hype train with mini movies that enhance the lore and characters

Select Your Companion NPCs Class – Companion NPCs are no longer locked into a certain class, so players can play alongside the NPCs whose story/company they enjoy and still have a class that benefits them

Spaceship and Character PVP – You are able to fight in both standard PVP objective based warzones with your character, but also in space PVP using your own ships

The Bad

Number of Classes – The game has eight classes, but realistically only 4 which are mirrored on each side with slightly different skills and playstyles, a bigger issue is that since the release four years ago they’ve not added a single extra class… pretty poor

Restrictive F2P Options – Whilst the game offers free to play option with full access to the class storylines, there are so many restrictions that it becomes a struggle to play and at times just not fun, even to the extent where “Sprint” (the generic ability for players to run faster to get around) is restricted until you hit level 10… why?!

The Game is Easy – Update 4.0 changed how quest content XP worked and now players can hit max level almost solely through completing their class quests, which means the quest content is ridiculously easy and lacking in challenge

Can’t Switch Factions – Whilst most MMORPGs don’t let you switch factions, the Dark/Light side system really would support it as Jedi can take only dark side options (and therefore aren’t particularly Jedi like) and similarly the Sith can focus on light side and taking more Jedi like “good” options

Lack of Chat Bubbles – All chat is done in the chat window, which means when grouped with lots of players its extremely difficult to keep track of individual conversations, this is particularly a problem with large groups of roleplayers
