Free-to-Play Racing Online Games

Free Online Racing Games - Article - EN

It’s an undeniable fact that racing games belong to an MMO genre which seldom leaves consoles to also conquer the F2P online PC market. Possibly one of the least crowded genres on the free-to-play market, the competition among the different racing games is much less ferocious as their battlefield is certainly not as oversaturated as it is, for example, the case for MMORPGs. So every time, a racing MMO make its way over, we’d love to leap behind the wheel (proving there is one!) in order to test drive it.

The most popular kind of racing games is the driving simulator, which truly dominates our list. However, we also included some titles that take quite great pains to try and offer something a bit different:

Need for Speed World - news

The heavy hitter on our list surely is Need for Speed World due to the big franchise behind the title and first and foremost for its outstanding visuals. Players are able to go up against other players from all across the globe or compete against challenging AI opponents. The somewhat sandbox typed game world invites them to have a ride around and take part in street races that they can join in either single player, multiplayer or private mode. Some of the available races are class-restricted, meaning that players are only allowed to race a certain sort of car during the event in order to even thing up between participants. In addition to classic races, players can also engage in evade and pursuit races the Need for Speed titles are famous for.

Drift City - news

Another title which tried to add a bit of story background to the game is Drift City. Set in the future, the worldwide oil scarcity no longer is threatening car fans as a new resource called Mittron is discovered, enabling cars to run faster for longer while a mysterious faction that drives cars called HUVs has arisen. Players have to perform missions across a tropical island and will collect a variety of different cars, enhance them with purchases from the Parts Shop or the auction house and enter the Battle Zone to race them in solo or team-based races.

Auto Club Revolution - news

Auto Club Revolution sports a huge array of available cars licensed by Jaguar, Chevrolet, Ford, Mazda, Koenigsegg, and other manufactors as well as several multiplayer modes the massive elimination mode in particular, in which players compete against each other to knock the opponents out of the race. You will be able to race on some of the most well-known racetracks in the world, recreated in every detail with laser scan technology that captures each single twist and turn from the real-world track and rendered in a highly polished and visually awesome game.

World of Speed - news

With its AAA HD visuals, World of Speed also belongs to the very top, offering various cars and multiple game modes that heavily focus on team-based gameplay to race in some pretty popular real-world locations, including racetracks as well as cities streets. Players will accumulate points via an already successful "Driver Score" system for completing compulsory mini-goals and team-based objectives while racing. This allows for the chance to still technically win the race, even if players wipe out on the first hairpin. They are also able to take on different roles during the race, such as Wingman, Drafter, Blocker and Drifter, which requires different play styles and rewards them for well performing this role.

Street Racers - news

Street Racers pretty much differentiates itself from other racing MMOs as players actually won’t take part in any race, at least not in the accurate meaning of the term. The title is rather similar to popular combat strategy MMORPGs, letting you start out with the most fundamental type of car (you wouldn’t even want to go to work in) and gradually add new upgrades and parts to them which increase its stats to somehow "level it up". Players won’t even see any racing as the races are completely automated and their modified car is only compared with the one of their opponent to determine the winner. Though this kind of game isn’t everyone’s cup of tea, it nevertheless deserves a place in this list, as this type of MMORPG grows in popularity.

Tales Runner - news

And finally, we want to conclude our list with Tales Runner, which has recently been re-launched by a new publisher and currently is in beta testing. It features a wide array of fantasy-based racecourses players have to race through on shank’s pony as they compete against each other in various game modes and challenging events. They have to dodge traps, environmental hazards and even enemy AI in order to cross the finish line. This undeniably is a different type of racing MMO but promises to provide players with lots of fun with its large character selection and incorporated mini-games.
