Exclusive E3 2014 Coverage: First Look at Rising Generals

Rising Generals - Exclusive - EN

InnoGames granted us a first insight into their upcoming cross-platform strategy title Rising Generals, a new and thrilling tactical empire building MMO we are particularly thrilled about. The MMO will be entirely cross-platform and available on browsers, tablets and smart phones, allowing players to seamlessly continue their play on different devices using the same account.

Rising Generals is specifically developed for mobile devices, but simultaneously allows for an intuitive usage of keyboard and mouse controls in web browsers. All platform versions will feature the same level of visual details, though players will be able to adjust the setting in case their device doesn’t run smooth enough with the best setting.

The developers also engaged PC game designer Bruce Shelley (renowned for titles such as Farmeville, Age of Empires and Sid Meier’s Civilization) as outside consultant to get his help with designs and concepts to ensure Rising Generals becomes the best possible.

At its heart, the MMO is a resource management and base building game that tasks players with building up an army to expand by taking control of additional territories. All players have their personal headquarters others are unable to take over. They will set up military units in order to fight for and take control of the large amount of territories, player-controlled and neutral ones, the game world is divided into.

Combat consists of setting up troops and attacking a rival player’s base. The result is automatically determined and depends on the amount of units in the attacking and defending army, the type of units as well as their upgrades. It’s kind of a rock-paper-scissors system in which all units are particularly weak against one or several other types of units and superior against others, forcing players to build up a balanced military of different troops.

Players are moreover able to assign specific officers to their army, who will grant various benefits, e.g. enhanced vehicle damage, and will upgrade when used in combat. In addition, they get access to spies they are able to send into rival players’ bases. Equipping them with specific gear, such as a fake identification, enhances their chances of success when infiltrating the enemy in order to find out about their resources currently stored in a particular base. Provided that the spy isn’t caught in the act, he is also able to reveal the rival’s defences, which is an essential advantage when planning an attack.

One of the game’s key elements is instant access to resources and units: While with other games players have to enter items into a build queue and wait for minutes, hours or even days before getting access to them (which requires long-term planning of what to enter when into the queue), Rising Generals allows them to instantly produce resources and units, whereupon this features is set on cooldown before it can be used again.

Due to the game’s cross-platform accessibility on mobile devices, players will hugely benefit from this system, allowing them to immediately perform actions or attacks when only checking in on the game for a few minutes on their way to work or during a break instead of having to wait.

The fact that no single player will be able to control the whole map encourages group-based play and the formation of alliances to work together with others in conquering sectors and with any luck the map in its entirety.

An interesting aspect with that is that players are not limited to only attacking territories they are directly connected to, but can send their troops in potentially any territory on the map, which is only restricted by the fact that troop movement requires fuel, thus resulting in a pretty expensive undertaking when attacking a distant territory. This nevertheless allows for trying new tactics and strategies in order to try and take control of key territories and for jointly attacking out off different directions.
