Checking out Dragomon Hunter During Gamescom

Dragomon Hunter - exclusive headlogo - EN

Dragomon Hunter is the newest free to play MMO from Aeria Games, recently launched in Korea the game has players exploring a huge fantasy style world seeking out powerful dragon creatures that they can fight and tame to add them to their collection. Sat in the beer garden at GamesCom (there were no free rooms, honestly) we were given a quick cinematic of how the game looks, the chibi style anime graphics add a real cartoony flavour that, we were told, is to offer greater appeal to their target audience; namely younger players and mid-teens. However, given that overwhelming popularity of Pokémon and the no doubt obvious similarities (which combined with the name we don’t think is a coincidence) we no doubt expect to see players of all ages in the game.

Primarily players can choose from four core classes: Cleric, Mage, Mercenary or Scout, and then head out into a massive open sandbox world to try and find the various rare and challenging Dragomon out in the wild. Hunting Dragomon is the name of the game and by finding, fighting and defeating them players are able to add them to their own personal collection and use them as pets, battle companions and even mounts. There is another reason for hunting them down and that is to do with the crafting system; players are able to craft their own armor and weapons with various resources found in the world, however many items an item will require a very specific component, a Dragem, that can only be found off Dragomon with each of them dropping their own unique dragem. Essentially the rarer and more powerful the item a player wants to craft the more powerful the Dragon that they must defeat in order to get it.

Right now there’s no word on when the game will be fully released, but the closed beta will be starting soon and you can sign up, expected for a fourth quarter testing phase then shifting into open beta shortly after. Whilst there’s little information about how the business model will work, the game being free to play, the focus seems to be primarily on cosmetic and vanity items and avoiding any pay to win.
