CCP Soundwave revealed some information on EVE Valkyrie, and it seems that CCP was one of the first supporters of the Oculus Rift Kickstarter project and they received an early developer kit. Some developers began to tinker with the Occulus Rift and eventually put out a tech demo to see what the CCP’s Carbon technology and the Oculus Rift could achieve together: EVE-VR was born.
They quickly realized the potential of EVE VR, and the demo proved to be devilishly fun, and people at the studio loved it, so they decided to go one step further and unveiled it in the EVE Fanfest, where it had a huge impact on the fans, and it’s then when EVE-VR demo officially became EVE Valkyrie.
The game is still in a very early development stage, and there is not much information about the game, which will be launched in 2014, but we still had the opportunity to play a demo of 3 minutes with the new Oculus Rift HD, which at the moment only CCP has.
After being told how the controls worked and how to use the oculus to get the maximum potential out of the demo, we started; we put a Occulus Rift on our heads, have to say that it is very light, and a Xbox controller plugged into a computer, and we were prepared to enjoy this spectacular experience.
Being able to move your head freely around the cockpit makes you aware of the enemies you have around without needing some radar, plus the missile locking mechanic mimicking the modern airplanes in which you lock your target by following it with your helmet is amazing. All in all, the experience was incredible: demo runs smooth, Oculus Rift image moves quick and is sharp; the gamepad is full of tricks to use in this upcoming dogfighting game, breaks, afterburner, barrel rolls and much more.
At the moment we don't know much more about the game, but I can say honestly, that the game could have us hooked for a long time, and that’s something you can’t say about most of the games out there.
