Things We Love About… Tribal Wars 2

A free to play MMO RTS Tribal Wars 2 is the sequel to the extremely popular Tribal Wars from InnoGames, players get to start out as the leader of their own tribal village and must work towards building it up, gathering resources and creating an army large enough to defend not just the village but any other cities as you expand your borders. A very challenging and competitive MMO the game is definitely not to everyone’s taste, however, there are a few things we really love.

Build an Empire
You get to actually build an Empire, not just a city. One of things we had about free to play browser RTS games is when they focus on being a city building game instead of an Empire building game; whilst we can definitely see why the difference of direction occurs as it fundamentally changes your gameplay, we are natural expansionists and love to get around. We’ve always been huge fans of the Sid Meier’s’ Civilization franchise, getting out and about and growing our territory is far more interesting than simply increasing the power of one location, being able to spread your borders means stepping into other players potential turf and that creates player conflict more than “I want to destroy your single city because that’s the purpose of the game”. Fighting over locations as they yield nearby resources, or are next to your currently owned territory creates much more purpose and meaningful PVP.

Alliances
“No man is an island”. Whilst initially everyone starts out as a solo player the emphasis on creating alliances with other players is extremely strong, the longer you play and the more invested you become in the game makes this requirement more of a necessity. Expanding your borders brings with it a lot of resources and rewards, but as they say: mo’ money mo’ problems, and soon you will have enemies picking away at you at all sides. Proving your dominance early gives you the option to create a sort of player made vassal system, either work with me or I will destroy you and letting players show their worth. Similarly if another player is stronger than you then declaring your fealty and subjugating yourself to their authority can at least grant your survival for a little longer… down the line perhaps you will be on an even footing and they treat you as an equal, or you will tire of being under their shadow and betray them!

The Co-op Feature
Play with other players accounts. Let’s presume you have made an Alliance that doesn’t look like it’s paper thin and going to end with a knife in the back, or presuming you play with friends who you have slightly more trust in (only slightly, my friends would destroy me just to troll me), then you can take advantage of the newest co-op feature. Here players can add up to two other players who can have full access to their account, able to login to the account (without the need for user and password) and fully administrate the village and your captured territories, build troops, manage resources, and everything else you as a player can do. This is an ideal situation if, for whatever reason, you’re not going to be able to play the game for a while and need some trusted (and semi-competent) players to handle things whilst you are away!

iOS and Android App
Players can play the game on their mobile device. We love companion apps and the cross-compatibility with the PC browser version and iOS or Android phone and tablet devices makes accessing the game so much easier. To stay competitive in the game then it really is one of those MMOs where you need to constantly be attacking, managing, building and preparing defenses against incoming invaders, so being able to do this whilst on the go when out and about means players can really stay in control of their village and tribe; albeit we’re sure your friends aren’t going to be thrilled about your anti-social behaviour with your head constantly in your phone checking to see how your most recent attacks went!

Unforgiving
Not for casuals. If you don’t like having to commit to a game then Tribal Wars 2 is not for you, if you don’t like having to constantly micro-manage then Tribal Wars 2 is not for you, if you don’t like the idea of building up a huge empire only to have it all taken away from you and being knocked out of the game…. then yeh… Tribal Wars 2 is not for you. The game can be pretty brutal and is the definition of War, you need to get big, get strong and get good at the game quickly, otherwise there are people around you who are going to pick you off… and we love that.

These are some of the things that we love about Tribal Wars 2, but what do you think? What do you love about this game? Would you add anything else to the list? We await your opinions! Let us know!!!!!
