Things We Love About… DCUO

DC Universe Online - WDWLA headlogo - DE

For our newest “What Do We Love About…” article we’re heading back over to DC Universe Online, not that long ago we pointed out some of the games major flaws in our “What Would You Change About...” piece and so we thought we’d share what it is that we believe makes DCUO the continued success that it is today. With strong storylines and quests, strong character customization and a ton of game content, these are but a few of the positives when it comes to this comic book MMORPG, but the following are the elements that we think really stands the game out:

  • The Legends PVP Mode - Fighting as iconic heroes and villains. Although the majority of players time in game is spend leaping, flying and running about as their own designed and created character, either in quest based or raid PVE or fighting in PVP, for us the opportunity to step into the boots of the primary comic heroes and villains in Legends PVP is awesome. Unlocked through Marks of the Legend or with the Station Cash premium currency, there’s a huge list of popular and lesser known superheroes and supervillains that players can buy, as well as a number of free ones depending on whether your chosen character that you’re accessing Legends PVP with is a villain or hero. Each hero has their own pre-set powers and attacks reminiscent of their fighting style in the comics and with a huge list to choose from with such greats as Harley Quinn, Joker, Superman, Deathstroke, Bizarro and more.

  • Action Packed Combat - Brawler style combat is extremely fun. One of the great things about DCUO is the combat, it feels really polished and the action style combo building puts you in control of each punch and roundhouse that makes you feel like you are playing a beat-em-up brawler as opposed to a tab and auto-attack style MMORPG. The types of attacks and powers you can utilize in battle is based off a pretty extensive power/attack customization with a wide variety of choices players can spend hours respeccing their character to try out different builds. Moreover you’re not bound to a single style of class and players have the ability to switch from DPS to Healer if they prefer, queueing for instances with their preferred role so that they are matched up with the right players, with each role type having different skillsets; all in all this provides a huge amount of diversity for personal playstyle in just one character.

  • The Intro Cinematic - The intro cinematic is like a featurette. Designed by Blur Studio (the company who also did Star Wars: The Old Republic, The Elder Scrolls Online and whole load of other games, movies and advert cinematics) the six minute intro sets the scene and primary storyline in the game, with its non-stop action that we’ve come to expect of Blur’s cinematics we see superheroes squaring off against supervillains in an epic showdown. Very few cinematics have left us in awe, but DCUO is definitely one of those that, regardless of whether you intend to play the game, is definitely worth watching for its awesomeness.

  • Low Level Cap - It’s pretty easy to get to the endgame content. In most MMORPGs the early game content is a slow journey to reaching endgame at which point some of the bigger and more interesting content and features are unlocked; DCUO isn’t any different and players will find the majority of their activities up to level cap/endgame being PVE quest focused. The content is enjoyable, but the game really picks up a gear when you hit max level, thankfully the relatively low level 30 cap is easy to reach and so players aren’t necessarily as desperate to burn through the PVE content just to reach max level as it can be done pretty easily and so you can take your time and enjoy the storylines.

  • Being Bad is Pretty Good - You actually get to play as the bad guys. In comparison to other MMORPGs where there are multiple factions you will often find that what divides them is politics, culture, tradition, philosophy or religion; rarely are playable factions pegged as being the “bad guys” and are simply misunderstood or have a different (albeit sometimes more aggressive) outlook on the world. In DCUO the game stays true to our generally anarchic supervillains and their ultimate goals for power, the missions and storylines put you out there as being a villain, albeit each has their own drive and motivating factors, ultimately they’re the bad guys in our story. Personally we’re happy that it’s in place, the developers could have quite easily focused it on being a superhero driven MMORPG with players always against the bad guys and criminals, instead they essentially served up two games for the price of one!

So that’s what we love with DC Universe Online, but more importantly what are some of your favourite things? What do you think could/should be added to our list that makes the game great? Let us know what you think in the comments below!
