Review: Magic Barrage, the fantasy 8-bit pixel-based MMO

Magic Barrage - Review - EN

Today we are going to talk about Magic Barrage the new pixel-based free to play browser game from R2Games and that has been developed by Gameguyz. The game, which is currently in open beta, is a classic retro shooter adventure in which you will have to run through colorful maps, dodgingarrows, fireballs, acid and more whilst trying to kill waves of enemies. The game moves away from the typical 3-D browser graphics that are currently on the market the game is definitely a tip of the hat to those old school RPG’s used to love.

To enter the game only you have to register an account on the game's official website, and click the big blue play button. Then game takes you to the character creation screen, where you can create up to three different characters (you can unlock more spaces, probably through paying premium currency), which is handy as the game comes with 3 different classes, the classic trio of Warrior, Archer, and Mage. For our analysis we chose an accurate and deadly Archer.

You make your way through the zone until you end up in a big bad Dragons cave, seemingly the main villain of the game, and end up being part of a huge fight between it and a lower of adventurers that suddenly appear who proceed kick the snot out of it whilst you run around like an idiot. After this sequence the dragon flees and your character appears in the main area of the game, where your adventure really begins.

The missions of the game have a rather striking feature, as with a simple click missions instantly transport you to the required NPC. Honestly, these kind of short cuts and “time-saving devices” that I’m not a huge fan of, it generally means you’re probably going to be speaking to a lot of NPC’s a lot of the time and want to skip through their dialogue so they have implemented a feature to make it a little bit more bearable. After teleporting us between a few NPC’s for a while we picked up new missiónwhich was accessed by going into the town portal and taking goes to an instanced area.

Each instance has several different modes that can be unlocked, ranging from easy to extreme (we only unlocked normal mode). By completing a Dungeon, you will receive a score that depends on the time you have taken to complete it, that determines which rewards you are going to receive. Instances have a very simple goal, make you way through lots of enemies until you reach the boss, defeat it and voila, you've already completed the quest, them a portal appears to teleport you back to town.

The character controls are basically the WASD keys, although it also allow diagonal free movement, which makes that you can dodge attacks more easily. Your character will attack in the direction that you left click with your mouse, or at least so it is with the Archer, allowing you to move in one direction while shooting in another. In our opinion the auto attacks, which allow you to shoot continuously arrows (which are endless, and kill enemies usually with one hit), takes the challenge completely out of this already quite easy game.

The game also has the typical MMO features, from Guilds, crafting systems, dungeons, arenas and more, as you kill creatures and gain XP to level up many of these features are unlocked along the way. The game is pretty fun, and surprisingly addictive, at least if you don’t play with the auto attack on, and will therefore have appeal to those who want the nostalgia of those first game experiences they had decades ago.
