Good and Bad Things About Heroes & Generals

Heroes and Generals - news

In Heroes & Generals players fill the boots of WW2 soldiers on the front line battling in fun and fast FPS matches or manage the campaign map pushing resources into the battles as a General with RTS gameplay that works in tandem with the FPS aspect. With an overall unique gameplay the game has plenty to offer, however, it still falls short in a few areas…

The Good

The Cause and Effect – The Generals RTS gameplay allows players to move resources around a campaign map for The War, giving more team lives to their faction in an FPS territory battle; the better the FPS players work the more resources they can save for the General who can use them in other areas

Win Conditions – There are three factions (Germany, US and Russia) and each will try to dominate a campaign map taking over territories, leading to an real game win for one faction that then resets the map and everyone can start again

Limited New Player Influence – As each death in a battle uses up communal resources for the entire faction, new players aren’t able to join the campaign until they have reached level 5, meaning Generals don’t have to worry about new inexperienced players using up resources by dying unnecessarily

Spotting the Enemy – Enemies aren’t automatically highlighted in the game and only appear with a target indicator/on the map if they fire their weapon or are successfully shot at by the enemy; this means players can use the games terrain, bushes, walls and more for cover for lots more tactical play

Using Vehicles – There’s plenty of vehicles to be used during a match, they can be used as actual weapons with planes and tanks, numerous transport vehicles such as jeeps that are able to carry multiple players to a point on the map, or solo bicycles so individuals can quickly get to the front line

The Bad

Upgrades Take Too Long – The rate at which players earn money is extremely slow when compared to how quickly they have to spend it, which means saving up enough money to get upgrades is very difficult and takes way too long

Maintenance and Consumable Costs - The biggest money sink is repairs on weapons which constantly take damage through use, as well as having to buy single use rockets and grenades, the result being that players have to weigh up whether each kill they might make with a consumable is financially worth it

Limited Number of Maps – Although the maps are well designed there’s just not enough of them, it doesn’t take long before players see the same maps appearing over and over, the rate at which new maps are added is simply abysmal

Unable to Change Characters – Players can have multiple characters with their own specializations, but they can’t switch them during a battle; even if your team is losing because you have a bad spread of character types even when you die you are locked into the same battle with your initial character choice

Constant “Early Access” - The game appears to stay in a perpetual “Early Access”, even though it has open access for years, even though users can spend money on the game, even though nothing seems to be fundamentally changing; it seems like “Early Access” is a scape goat excuse for any issues the game still has in terms of bugs and imbalance
