How Free-to-Play is World of Tanks Generals?

World of Tanks Generals - F2PMeter headlogo - EN

World of Tanks Generals is a free to play turn based card strategy, in it players battle one on one across a gridded battle map and have the single goal of trying to destroy the enemies headquarters; this is done by playing various cards randomly drawn from their deck and trying to out play and out maneuver enemy opponents. Cards can be used directly from the deck with ability cards, but most come in the form of various WW2 unit cards, with tanks playing the dominant role they are placed and moved around the grid to try and take out enemy units and ultimately the opponents headquarters. The game is free to play and can be accessed directly through web browsers, but we’re going to put it through our F2P Meter to see just how free it really is!

'No'

Are there micro-transactions? Can you buy stuff in-game with real money?

'Yes' ― -5%

You can purchase Gold Bars with real money and then spend that on various items within the game instead of having to purchase it with the standard credits currency. Some cards/units can only be purchased with Gold Bars.

Do micro-transactions give advantages in any way?

'Yes' (but…) ― -10%

The main advantage is time, as there are Premium cards that can only be bought with Gold Bars you can spend real cash to get them straight away, otherwise Gold Bars can occasionally be earned in game but takes a long time to build up enough needed to purchase individual cards. If players aren’t willing to spend money on buying gold then they will be relying on earning it from playing games, similarly players who pay for the Subscription get extra XP and Credits, so can build up their decks faster.

'No'

Can you fully enjoy the game without paying a single 'penny'?

'Yes' ― +10%

The game is still in its early days and so there aren’t that many cards in the system that purchasing the Premium Cards is going to give so much of an advantage to the majority of players. Whilst some pay to play accounts may drop lots of cash to fill their deck with Premium Cards, they are in the minority. For everyone else there is still the element of chance when cards are being drawn so Premium Cards don’t always appear when you need them to. For most people they will be able to enjoy the strategy behind World of Tanks Generals without getting too hung up on the micro-transaction business plan.
