Fighting the War at Gamescom

Heroes and Generals - Exclusive - EN

At this year’s Gamescom, we had the chance to meet Reto-Moto producer Kenneth Ellegaard to find out what’s going on in Heroes & Generals and especially about the Rommel update the main focus of which is the overhaul of the general system.

Ellegaard introduced us to the MMO and told players are able to play as a hero belonging to one of these soldier classes: fighter pilot, tank crew, recon, paratrooper, or rifleman. This alone makes you already imagine the in-depth battles the title features. He then went on with generals, the thinking head that lead the heroes.

In former times, it was quite easy for players to become a general, which often resulted in inexperienced commanders taking wrong decisions and even in some giving up after some time, etc. With the Rommel update in place, players now have to level up their character first and gain experience throughout multiple battles before being able to become general, which will grant bonuses depending on what they specialised in in the process of levelling up. This ensures that generals have fought as heroes first to know what they’re capable of when commanding them.

The producer then announced that Heroes & Generals is already on early access on Steam, which triggered a respectable increase in their player base, and that the community is providing them with great feedback. Based on their feedback, developers decided to revise the game’s general aspect in order to overcome a few existing issues. Moreover, there is now is a synergy between heroes and generals that allows them to acquire assault teams when playing as heroes to then use them as generals.

Player feedback also resulted in the introduction of other changes, e.g. regarding capitals. Players previously only had to work out the best strategy to take two capitals, so that the best tactics to take control always ended up being the same. Now there are 15 capitals to be taken over, which require different tactics, meaning that players are able to still focus on trying to take control of one or two of them or to spread their resources wider in an attempt to gain control over more.

Kenneth Ellegaard then elaborated on gear customisation, explaining that, in addition to weapon upgrades, players are also able to obtain really cool cosmetics things in form of engraves, decals and camouflage, which is seemingly the game’s main source of revenue. One aspect that we really appreciated is that when players convert their soldier into a general, all their gear will be stored in the warehouse, allowing them to use it on another character so that it is not wasted.

In addition to item customisation, the Rommel update also added a few more things, one of which is a wrench that enables players to repair vehicles. Developers hope for new tactics in regards to vehicles, such as players being more careful and hiding to them repaired, etc.
