We took a look at Let’s Fish, the fishing MMO from Ten Square Games that is playable for free in any major browser. We were curious to find out how we would get along in the virtual fishing grounds all across the globe, so we grabbed our rod, cooked our bait and set off to the calm stretches of water to see what we would catch. Let’s Fish turned out to be a basic and casual MMO which is optimised for Facebook and the likes, basically allowing players to gradually enlarge their fishing tackle and try to unlock a variety of achievements from catching fish.

After a simple and quickly done registration via the official website, we immediately entered the game and were welcomed by NPC tutorial guide "Mike" who accompanied us throughout our first steps in the game. To start off, we were introduced to basic aspects of tackle, the importance of selecting the appropriate hook, line, rod and bait to be able to catch fish of different weights, as well as how different gear combinations had an influence on the caught fish type. Matching up the correct tackle components that would complement each other is a key aspect to the game. To get started, we got some fundamental stuff, including a basic rod, a lightweight line and some bread that we used as bait when conquering the fishery of Small Lake.

The game features pretty simple mechanics; once you’ve selected your tackle and chosen the location, you simply have to click the "cast your line" button to do exactly what it reads. An instant later, your float will suddenly dive into the water surface, upon which you have to activate the "pull" button to reel in your fish. Then you have to frequently click your left mouse button to prevent the emerging gauge from drifting into the red. However, clicking to often results in driving the indicator into the green, which presumably isn’t good either for we got the advice to keep it around the centre. This way, you continue to reel in the fish while the float gets closer to a certain circle on the water surface, which once reached indicates that you’ve successfully caught your fish.

There are various sizes, shapes and weights of fish and new fish types that you catch are recorded by the system along with their weight, allowing you to see whether you’ve beaten your personal record and unlocked another achievement, which is one of the game’s key elements. There is a plethora of achievements to unlock in a variety of fishing grounds all across the planet, e.g. catching all available types of fish in a specific fishery, landing a specific weight or a certain total of weights from several fish
You can moreover mount your catch as a trophy in your personal collection.

New gear, such as reels, ground bait, lures, nets and even vehicles can be bought in the shop along with other bonuses, allowing players to catch different types of fish. Regarding the currency, players have coins and cash notes to their disposal. The former can be earned by accomplishing tasks and increasing in level, the latter function as premium currency which can be purchased with real-world cash and are also granted for levelling up, meaning that players aren’t forced to part with their cash.

In the advanced course of the game, players are able to practise more advanced fishing, like sea fishing, for example. They will also unlock talents from the talent tree to increase their various techniques and receive benefits and boosts in specific key areas of fishing. To go sea fishing, a specific equipment is required and only the most advanced players get access to this feature.

However, players can meanwhile get involved in loads of tournaments, lotteries and competitions, such as a daily competition to catch the biggest fish which influences the player’s ranking and rewards them with points as well as a cup for the winner. Players are also able to challenge each other in friendly and competitive fishing duels, which emphasises the social aspect that is further supported by an in-game chat channel to talk to each other and share accomplishments, newly unlocked prizes, a huge trophy or anything else that’s worth bragging about.
