We thought it was time to check out Infinite Crisis, Turbine’s latest MOBA game set in the DC Comics universe, in which players are able to take on the role of an enormous array of heroes and villains of the DC Multiverse to compete against each other in team-based matches in classic MOBA style. Not knowing particularly much about the MMO in advance, we were quite optimistic when stepping in for our first look at it, as we’d heard only good things. Not quite great MOBA players ourselves, we were eager to find out how Infinite Crisis caters the more casual gamer and what may attract more seasoned veterans.

While other MOBAs stick with the traditional combat on several "lanes", Infinite Crisis wants to deliver something a bit different with various gameplay modes and distinct maps. There are still waves of minions to fight through as well as tower defences; however Turbine seems to have become aware of the fact that reinventing the wheel would be pointless and therefore tries to provide players with something new. Some of the available maps are particularly different with their own unique features able to drastically transform the battle field, which forces players to at least hinder their opponents in accomplishing these ultimate objectives in case they’re unable to achieve them themselves.

During our playtest, we entered the map "Gotham Heights", which presents a typical point capture system and sees 2 opponent teams fight over neutral points to raise their score by defending them as long as possible. Players will be able to find useful speed boosts and health packs scattered around on this specific map (which doesn’t inevitably mean those will appear on other maps as well), while the "Orbital Cannon", the major feature is situated in the middle of Gotham Heights.

Players can try to gain control over this point of interest to summon Assault Drones that function as elite mobs and fend off enemy attackers and also cause a meteor shower going down on the jungle near the enemy base, limiting the opponent’s access to recourses. Our team succeeded in launching several Orbital Strikes, although we have to admit in all honesty that, as complete noobs, we didn’t have the foggiest idea how this became possible or what exactly triggered it.

Infinite Crisis provides players with a huge roster of champions from the DC Multiverse to pick from, meaning that the entire DC franchise IP is used to not only offer classic Batman, but also the hero’s Gaslight and Nightmare version originating from the other universes he has been part of. These different versions add far more than just a great new skin by providing players with the opportunity to experience an entirely different play style. This is also true for other champions, e.g. standard Wonder Woman or Superman and their "Mecha" variants.

We opted for a melee/ bruiser role and joined the battle with classic Doomsday. An important aspect to be aware of is that each character can fulfil one or even several roles, ranging from controllers to assassin damage dealers, blasters and so on; each one is moreover characterised by a balance of power, attack and HP which determines their type of inflicting damage.

The MMO as such is quite fast-paced, even though for us, who aren’t that familiar with the MOBA genre, it initially was all but evident what we were supposed to do or how to play our character in an efficient way. As the end of the match drew nearer, we were slowly getting used to the controls though and gathered the impression of contributing at least a bit to our team. We don’t have any doubts that players will manage to master this MMO, just like they do with other MOBAs such as League of Legends. They will know which skills and talents to increase in which order to result in the most efficient gameplay while still having an interesting dynamic with the different game modes and maps.
