Things We Love About Drakensang Online

We're checking out the “Things we Love About...” Drakensang Online in our latest article. This free to play grim-dark fantasy RPG from developers Bigpoint transports players into a world of dungeons, magic and monsters as they battle through exciting story-driven content. Whilst being around for a good few years now Drakensang Online seems to have managed to keep up to date, fresh and goes from strength to strength; as ever not everything is perfect, but here's the things that we love the most about the game.

Action RPG Content
The game delivers fast and exciting combat, compelling storylines and stunning visuals to create an immersive RPG title. Whenever you add in the "free to play" element to an "online RPG" title, especially to browser (or mini-client) game, then it's natural to presume that a game is going to suffer in quality to what we might expect from single player RPGs. In truth Drakensang Online does a really great job of keeping that single-player RPG experience and quality and throwing in action combat such as the Diablo series, offering that multiplayer exploration and content.

Regular Server Events
The game offers a stream of unique in-game events every 3-4 weeks. One thing we really like that developers do is when they have an active, constant involvement in the game, instead of making it and just letting players enjoy what is there, when they evolve the game and add new content. With Drakensang Online it is the regular events where players will have to seek out new enemies, harvest resources to reach new locations, defend regions from wave after wave of monsters and PVP competitions that offer real world rewards. Players look forward to seeing what the event will be each month, what rewards they can get, and what challenges they will face.

Skill/Talent System 2.0
The skill revamp offered more to the game. With the latest version of the skill and talent system players now have a lot more customization over their characters builds, offering a greater variety but still keeping the system simple enough to not be overwhelming. For every skill players have a choice of three different talents that will change how the skill works in various ways, offering additional buffs and utility. Aside from the Skill Talents players can unlock Knowledge Talents to boost their various stats in different ways, offering even more versatility. For those who enjoy PVP then the Fame Talents allow them to focus on building up a pure PVP character built for the arenas, where there talents don’t benefit them in PVE so as to avoid things like power creep with builds and allows a separation between PVP and PVE.

Arena PVP Modes
The game offers some fun PVP content. For a multiplayer RPG the last thing we would have expected was PVP, but Bigpoint did a great job of prioritizing it not only with the PVP talents system but also with various instanced PVP modes. The modes range from a 1 on 1 duel mode, 3 on 3 team deathmatch where the players must eliminate all the enemy team, a classic 5 on 5 Capture the Flag with a battle to bring the flag back to base, or a 6 on 6 Storm Fortress with a tower attack/defend mode on a timed map. The addition of PVP in itself is great, especially when with RPGs it is easy to overlook, but the fact that the PVP modes aren't just pure deathmatch and instead have some objective based combat is even better.

Premium vs Grind Balance
Drakensang does a half decent job about balancing out the need to grind versus paying for content. Very little of the content is outright "pay to win", though there's always players who will argue the contrary because too many players feel that "free to play" should mean having access to a full game and the developers making no money. In truth when compared to other F2P MMOs Bigpoint haven't done too badly, whilst the free route obviously adds more grind, and the paid premium helps shortcut a lot of things or gain access to some gear. The single fact is that the premium currency, Andermant, can be earned solely by playing and found in loot drops, quest rewards and from creatures of your level (to stop low mob farming). Whilst it's still not going to come as quickly and in as big a bulk as buying it with cash, it being available means that there's nothing in the game locked behind a purchase only paywall, and that's great.

So that’s what we love with Drakensang Online, but more importantly what are some of your favourite things? What do you think could/should be added to our list that makes the game great? Let us know what you think in the comments below!
